Cambodian police arrested a German national in Phnom Penh Sunday for allegedly sexually abusing and filming underage girls, local media reported Monday.
Karl Heinz Henning, 61, was arrested close to his rented apartment on Street 278 after sustaining injuries from jumping from his balcony in a bid to escape from police enforcing a search warrant at the address, The Cambodia Press Review reported.
According to Keo Thea, deputy chief of the municipality's anti- human trafficking department, the man's leap for freedom was almost suicidal. "He dared to jump from his apartment about eight meters to the ground while we were going through his belongings," he said.
During the raid, department officers and local authorities rescued four young Vietnamese girls, and confiscated pornographic video cassettes and VCDs, together with film production apparatus. Other sadistic equipment including rope was also discovered.
Keo Thea said that authorities seized over 20 video cassettes and digital video equipment that could document as many as 1,600 individual sexual acts committed with children.
"We rescued four girls aged 10, 11, 13 and 14 and we have confiscated many cassettes in which he has sex with other underage girls in his rented department," Keo Thea said.
The police operation came after the NGO Action for Children alleged that Karl Heinz Henning was engaged in sexual intercourse with and debauchery against underage girls. The NGO heard these allegations from the suspect's neighbors who frequently observed female minors coming in and out of the German's apartment, which he had rented for almost one year.
Karl Heinz Henning was allegedly producing pornographic films to sell in Germany via the Internet.
The suspected pedophile is currently undergoing treatment at Phnom Penh's Calmette Hospital for minor injuries suffered following his escape bid. He is likely to face charges of debauchery and human trafficking.
